Clinical Observation of Chest Trauma



Abstract
1. Clinical observation and its reviews were presented on 93 cases of chest trauma, who were admitted to the department of General Surgery, Woo Suk University Hospital, during the past four years period, from August 1965 to August 1969.
2. Most common causes were traffic accident(50.5%), stab wound(21.5%) and assault(12%).
3. The ratio of male to female in chest trauma was 2. 8 : 1.
4. Among 93 cases, 27 cases had penetrating injuries, whereas 66 cases were from non-penetrating injuries.
5. 48 cases(51. 6%) had bony fracture and among these, 35 cases had rib bone fracture.
6. Early closed thorncostomy was carried out for 26 cases and on 7 cases, repeated thoracentesis was carried out.
7. Open thoracotomy was done on 8 cases and its indication was discussed.
8. Overall mortality was 3. 2%(3 cases) and causes of death were post-traumatic shock on two cases and head injury on one case.
